I have prayed for wisdom, now I pray for peace
It seems the more I know now, the less that I can sleep
Stay imprisoned in my conscience, trying to figure what it means
To be caught between a nightmare and the sweetest of dreams

Some days a raven, some days a dove
Some days the dark cloud hanging round
Others from the light above
I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood
Some days a raven, some days a dove

You may question how I’m living, it might scare you half to death
I’ve been forgive for my sinning, Lord knows I ain’t through sinning yet
I get my singing from my mama, I get the fight from my old man
I don’t always know where I’m going, but I know exactly what I am

Some days a raven, some days a dove
Some days the dark cloud hanging round
Others from the light above
I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood
Some days a raven, some days a dove

Some days a raven, some days a dove
Some days the dark cloud hanging round
Others from the light above
I’m scuffed by the devil, but I’m washed up in the blood
Some days a raven, some days a dove
Some days a raven, some days a dove

ABOUT

“Proudest co-write I’ve ever been a part of. Stemmed from the fact that Cody has a tattoo of a raven on one hand and a dove on the other. I got to asking him about what those tattoos represent to him and the song wrote itself pretty quickly… like 20 minutes quickly at the same kitchen table we wrote “The Wanting”. A songwriter has got to know when to labor and when it’s best to get out of the way and let the song write itself.

Co-writing is a weird enterprise… it’s like a therapy session with no psychiatrist… just two patients. You end up spending a lot of time talking about personal things and divulging a lot of yourself in hopes that together you can exploit that to write a great song. Some of my favorite Cody lines he wrote in this song. He has a way of writing very direct and confessional like Willie Nelson or J.D. Salinger (if Salinger wrote country songs).

The Raven & The Dove is a gospel song… one Cody and I probably could not have pulled off if we didn’t both have such a love for Billy Joe Shaver. Production sounds like a late Saturday night turned Sunday morning… stumbling into church in last night’s liquor soaked denim with blood on your lip… hungover and seeking forgiveness.”
