I lost my way
I lost track
My heart and all my money
The shirt off my back
Then I found a place
To lie and rest
Clear the cloudy skies of my mind
Clean up my mess

I’m not sure if this is prayer, or if it’s plea
Beggin’ or hopin’ or my insanity
You’re my first clean breath after the fire
You’re that cool drink of water my soul requires

Are you the sunshine
Are you are the rain
You light my darkness
You wash my pain
You’re I love you in a world of doubt
Fill me with somethin’, I can’t go without

I’m not sure if this is a prayer or if it’s plea
Beggin’ or hopin’ or my insanity
You’re my first clean breath after the fire
You’re the cool drink of water my soul requires

ABOUT

"The song "After The Fire" started with the first part of the chorus. I had the phrase “I’m not sure if this is prayer, or if its plea… or begging or hoping or just my insanity" rolling around in my head for a while and finally decided to sit down and do something with it. I want to say I wrote the first half of the first verse and the first half of the second verse and then got stuck.
Cody and I had written another song together called "The High Road" and it's always a favorite for people at shows, so I thought I’d shoot him what I had. We kicked it back and forth a few times with him adding some and me adding some, and he really rounded off the edges and helped turn it into a really great song. I had looked at it as a relationship song, but once it was done Cody said he played it for his wife and she asked if it was a religious song. I hadn't thought of it that way but Cody and I agreed that it could definitely be taken as such. That's the beauty of a good song. It can have a different meaning for different people, and nobody is wrong! If that is how it strikes the listener, then that's what it's about. If they see it as a relationship song, it can be that.

Cody and I first met when we played Texas Red Dirt Roads with Justin Frazzell. I want to say this was either 2013 or 2014. Courtney Patton had told both of us individually about each other, so when we met we already felt like we knew each other and hit it off. I feel like we trust each other's songwriting perspective, so when we are working on a song we can see where the other is going, plus we both know that the song is more important than our ego, so if one of us says "what about this instead of that" we are willing to listen."
